To pass roof-strength tests, the roof must withstand a force equal to four times the vehicle’s weight before it caves in 5 inches. According to IIHS, the Fusion can withstand 5.14 times its own weight.
Two of the Fusion’s recently redesigned competitors—the 2013 Honda Accord and 2013 Nissan Altima—have yet to be rated by IIHS; the 2012 Accord was a Top Safety Pick, but the 2012 Altima fell short in roof-strength and rear crash tests.
Another midsize sedan rival, the updated-for-2013 Chevrolet Malibu, also earned Top Safety Pick Status this year. The 2013 Ford Fusion is on sale now. It starts at $22,495, including a $795 destination charge.
