Another off-road-ready crossover is coming to the Subaru lineup. Based on the Impreza, the 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek arrives this fall. The compact crossover has rugged, go-anywhere styling, standard all-wheel drive and 8.7 inches of ground clearance.

Power comes from Subaru’s 148-horsepower, 2.0-liter boxer engine. Two versions of the brand’s Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive are available depending on transmission. A five-speed manual transmission is standard; a CVT with paddle shifters is available. The latter allows the driver to choose from six preset ratios.

Subaru expects the Crosstrek to get 25/33 mpg city/highway. A standard eco gauge should help improve gas mileage; it shows the driver when the vehicle is being driven most efficiently.

Outside, an elevated ride height, black side and wheel arch cladding, spoiler and roof rails add to the Crosstrek’s rugged look, as do stylized 17-inch wheels.

Inside, the Crosstrek boasts 35.4 inches of backseat legroom. The 60/40-split second-row seats fold flat to create 52.4 cubic feet of cargo room. The cargo area is equipped with a removable waterproof tray and hooks for tying down luggage or securing grocery bags.

Premium and Limited trim levels will be available. Premium versions come standard with a tilt and telescoping steering wheel with audio controls; power windows, door locks and mirrors; Bluetooth wireless connectivity; and a USB port. Limited versions add standards like leather-trimmed seats and surfaces, automatic climate control, rear-seat armrest with dual cupholders, rearview camera and HD radio. A power moonroof and a navigation system are standalone options on both trim levels. The latter has a 6.1-inch touch-screen with voice control.

Pricing will be announced closer to the vehicle’s on-sale date.
