The Land Rover LR4 SUV mixes off-road capability with on-road refinement and provides occupants with numerous luxury amenities. It seats up to seven and competes with the BMW X5, Mercedes-Benz M-Class and Lexus GX 460.
New for 2014 A supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 engine and an eight-speed automatic transmission replace the 5.0-liter V-8 and six-speed automatic used previously. The V-6 produces 340 horsepower, 35 hp less than the V-8, but Land Rover claims comparable performance and better gas mileage. The LR4 also gains fuel-saving stop-start technology that automatically shuts the engine off when the vehicle is stopped, as well as a lighter single-speed transfer case for the standard four-wheel-drive system. A two-speed transfer case is now part of an available Heavy Duty Package that includes a locking rear differential and full-size spare tire.
Land Rover has also restyled the LR4. Changes are concentrated in front with a new two-bar grille and new front bumper, headlights and fog lights. Meanwhile, new Meridian stereos are available for the cabin, and a backup camera is now standard.
