The 2015 BMW i8 is a bit like that guy on your high school football team who spent too much time hitting the weights and not enough hitting the sleds. He looked formidable in uniform, but just couldn’t match his intensity in the gym with performance on the field. When we recently tested the outlandishly stylish i8 to determine its merits as a daily driver, part of what we found was that for all its exotic impracticalities, the plug-in hybrid sports car just wasn’t bringin’ it in the driving-excitement department quite enough to justify all the flash.
But flash it has in abundance, and if performance was measured by oohs, ahhs and double takes from onlookers, then the i8 might be counted among the most exciting cars we’ve ever driven. From its ostentatiously sleek and muscular shape to its sea-creature styling cues to its show-stopping carbon-fiber-and-aluminum scissor doors opening toward the sky as if indicating its flight path before takeoff, the i8 was built to give people whiplash from craning to catch a glimpse, not necessarily from breakneck acceleration.
