Vehicles Affected: Approximately 144 model-year 2016-17 Mitsubishi i-MiEV electric hatchbacks
The Problem: The front passenger airbag inflator may rupture in a crash necessitating airbag deployment, spewing metal fragments into the cabin and striking vehicle occupants, potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
The affected vehicles are part of the massive ongoing recall of airbag inflators manufactured by Japan’s Takata Corp., and expand upon Mitsubishi’s similar recall of model-year 2012 and 2014 i-MiEVs in January.
The Fix: Dealers will replace the passenger-side front airbag inflator for free.
