2016 Chevrolet Malibu Earns IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus
CARS.COM — The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has named Chevrolet’s redesigned Malibu midsize sedan a Top Safety Pick Plus, the agency’s highest designation. The 2016 Malibu received good ratings in all areas of testing as well as a superior rating for its optional front crash prevention system.

When equipped with the front crash prevention system, which is newly optional for 2016, IIHS said the Malibu avoided a collision at 12 mph and slowed by an average of 24 mph in the 25-mph test. When the car was equipped with the City Speed Front Automatic Braking system, it avoided a collision in the 12-mph test and slowed by 9 mph in the 25-mph test, earning an advanced rating.
The sales leaders in the midsize sedan class, the 2016 Honda Accord and 2016 Toyota Camry, also earned the Top Safety Pick Plus designation.
To qualify for Top Safety Pick Plus status, vehicles must earn good scores in all of the agency’s crash tests as well as offer a front crash prevention system rated as advanced or superior. To earn the second-tier Top Safety Pick designation, vehicles must pass all crash tests with good scores but only have to offer a basic-rated front crash prevention system.
