For stylish, frugal, al fresco fun, it’s hard to beat the consistently delightful Mazda MX-5 Miata. Wisely avoiding trying to “fix what ain’t broke,” the redesigned 2016 Miata manages to change just enough to keep things exciting, while not tampering with what we already love about the little roadster — particularly in the looks department.

Slightly augmented dimensions make it the shortest, widest Miata of all time. Meanwhile, a more curvaceous front end, narrow-eyed LED headlights and face-defining character lines on the hood distinguish it as the bad boy to previous models’ nice guy. That’s in addition to a less rounded, more serious-looking black front grille and 16- or 17-inch alloy wheels.
Fans of the Miata’s open-air driving experience may miss the power retractable hardtop option; only the ragtop is now available. But they’ll likely forget all about that in the face of other changes — namely the new SkyActiv 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, which Cars.com reviewer Joe Wiesenfelder says helps make this the “best Miata ever.” Check out the gallery below.
