2016 Nissan Sentra, Infiniti QX60 Earn IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus Award

CARS.COM — Two updated models from Nissan and its Infiniti luxury arm were awarded the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s top designation, Top Safety Pick Plus. The Nissan Sentra sedan, redesigned for 2016, and the Infiniti QX60 SUV, freshened for the new model year, earned good ratings in all of IIHS’s five crashworthiness tests as well as a superior rating for front crash prevention.

Both models offer an optional front crash prevention system this year, and IIHS said that in the agency’s 12-mph test, the Sentra avoided a collision completely and greatly reduced its speed before impact in the 25-mph test. The 2016 QX60 avoided a collision in both tests.

For model-year 2015, the Sentra received good scores across the board but lacked a front crash prevention system. Last year, the QX60 also earned good crash test scores, but IIHS gave its front crash prevention system a basic rating because it only marginally reduced the vehicle’s speed before impact. To qualify for Top Safety Pick Plus, a vehicle must earn good ratings in all crash tests as well as an advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention.
