It’s the time of year when the cars on dealer lots go from 2015 to 2016 model years, and it’s often hard to tell the difference. Subaru is mildly updating one of its most popular models, the XV Crosstrek, without a price change over last year, while it brings an unchanged 2016 Impreza to shoppers with a $100 price increase. Both models go on sale in late fall.

Nearly everything under the hood and inside the XV Crosstrek remains the same for 2016, with a starting price of $22,445, including a destination fee. What’s new are a revised front bumper and grille on both the gasoline model and the hybrid, which gets a glossy black finish on the grille. Both also received updated headlights, and the gas models get new 17-inch alloy wheels.

If you pick a Premium or higher trim level, the interior now sports orange stitching around the cabin and a redesigned steering wheel. There are also new optional safety packages that include automatic collision notification.

The Impreza, which the XV Crosstrek is based on, receives no updates for 2016. The base prices for all Impreza trims are $100 higher. The 2016 Impreza 2.0i base sedan starts at $19,090, including a destination fee.

With so few changes coming, it might be a good option to buy a 2015 model. There are currently more than 3,600 2015 Subaru XV Crosstreks in Cars.com’s national inventory and 4,022 Imprezas
