CARS.COM — If Paul Newman and Tom Cruise starred in a movie about the 2017 Mercedes-Benz G550 4×4 Squared, it would be titled, “The Color of New Money.” Seriously, with this thing? It’s like Mercedes meets monster-truck rally. The G550 4×4 Squared takes the hey-look-at-me-I’m-rugged! attributes of the regular G-Class and multiplies them by themselves to get this ridiculous thing, now debuting at the 2016 Los Angeles Auto Show — in the heart of the city where you’re most likely to actually see one on the street at some point.
Eventual buyers will have to pony up nearly $226,000 for this luxury SUV/armored personnel carrier, allowing them to make their wealth conspicuous both now and in the post-apocalypse. The G550 4×4 Squared bears the regular G-Class’ boxy bod, while jacking up the ground clearance by nearly 8 inches and widening the front track by more than 10 inches, if for no other reason to make room for those massive wheels. It has significantly increased approach and departure angles for tackling that SoCal mountain-scape without scratching the skid plate, as well as its water-fording capabilities … in case, you know, the drought clears up.
Inside the militarized-society-chic cabin are abundant high-grade flourishes like carbon-fiber trim on the dash and console (matchy-matchy with the expansive carbon-fiber-covered fenders and roof outside), leather upholstery with contrast stitching, lattice-pattern quilting on the doors and seating surfaces, and a chubby, flat-bottom sport steering wheel and metal sport pedals.
