CARS.COM — We’re all just people here, no one among us inherently better than the other. The fundamental distinction between us and most — pretty much all — of you is that we got to drive the 2017 Porsche 718 Cayman S at Roebling Road Raceway outside Savannah, Ga., recently and you didn’t. Generous souls that we are, however, we would like to include you in our good fortune by regaling you with further knowledge and aspirational photos of this high-performance luxury coupe.
With the redesigned-for-2017 718 Cayman — the dawn of the model’s third generation — Porsche has achieved the difficult task of taking a great car and making it even greater, and the Cayman S is the biggest recipient of these improvements. It doesn’t appear drastically different from the outgoing version (not a bad thing), save for a tamer-looking lower front bumper area and intakes, but the already-stellar driving dynamics are further enhanced by the increased body rigidity courtesy of a new cross-member at the rear subframe.
That, of course, is in addition to the new horizontally opposed, turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder, which makes a significantly heftier 350 horsepower and 309 pounds-feet of torque — best paired with the automatic transmission as opposed to the available manual gearbox. Inside the cockpit, the driver can choose from four selectable modes, including Normal, Sport, Sport Plus and a configurable Individual mode.
Meanwhile, the Sport Response button gives the driver max acceleration for 20 exhilarating seconds, timed via a display countdown — but all you have to do to launch your vicarious ride-along is click on the photo gallery above in 5-4-3-2-1…
