2018 Porsche 911 GT3: Icon of the Road Hits the Track

CARS.COM — We've said it before, and we'll say it again: The Porsche 911 is one of those rare vehicles on the planet that belongs in the "iconic" category. Its shape hasn't changed much over its multidecade lifespan, and neither has its basic idea — a low, generally upright sports coupe with the engine hanging out over the back wheels. There are dozens of different variants of the 911, but the most fun ones are the track-oriented varieties like the 911 GT3, seen in the gallery above.

Powered by a naturally aspirated 4.0-liter flat-six engine, it doesn't rely on turbochargers to make its ponies — it does it all the old-fashioned way, through high compression and big displacement. It pumps out 500 horsepower at a super-high-revving 8,250 rpm, which is good enough to propel the rear-wheel-drive coupe from zero-to-60 mph in just 3.2 seconds, according to Porsche. You can get one with a six-speed manual transmission, too, which is increasingly rare in new Porsches, but the one I drove recently at Roebling Road Raceway outside Savannah, Ga., was equipped with Porsche's excellent seven-speed PDK dual-clutch automatic.

The GT3 is fully track-ready off the showroom floor. Featuring a standard racing-tuned chassis with dynamic engine mounts and rear-axle steering, six-piston front brake calipers and four-piston rears, along with 20-inch wheels featuring Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, getting to the track will be almost as much fun as circling it when you arrive.

If you're feeling like you need one, you'd better check out the used-car market, as they're hard to find and expensive to procure. The starting price for a 2018 911 GT3 is $144,650 with destination, and like all Porsches, if you want creature comforts, you'll be paying extra for options — a lot extra. But for a car this capable, comfortable and drop-dead gorgeous, you get what you pay for.
