2018 Volkswagen Atlas: Recall Alert
Vehicles Affected: Approximately 9,700 model-year 2018 Volkswagen Atlas SUVs
The Problem: During production, the air-conditioning system drain tube may have been twisted, causing water to drain into the airbag control module. The wet airbag control module may result in an unintentional deployment of the airbags, increasing the risk of injury or a crash.
The Fix: Dealers will inspect the A/C drain tube, and if it’s twisted, the drain tube and airbag control module will be replaced for free. Some of the affected vehicles have had their drain tube previously replaced but did not receive a new airbag control module; the airbag control module will be replaced in those vehicles, also for free.
What Owners Should Do: Volkswagen will begin notifying owners Oct. 14. Owners can call the automaker at 800-893-5298, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
