Americans like things that are big and affordable — hello, Wal-Mart. And with the 2018 Passat, Volkswagen appears to have hit on that winning formula, though you have to give up a few things in return. Let’s take a look at some of the Passat’s hits and misses.

The interior gets a mixed review. The clean control layout and dashboard design are hits, and the two-tone seats and chrome strip along the dash are compelling visual touches. What are the misses? Note the fake wood paneling along the dashboard and center console, for starters. Some areas could use more padding for occupant comfort, too.

The multimedia system is another hit. While the screen looks small in the center of a gigantic dashboard, the system is very easy to use, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard in all but the base trim level, which gets a 5-inch multimedia screen without the two integrations.

The base engine is new this year. It’s a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, and it’s terrific around town. The six-speed automatic transmission snaps off quick shifts for peppy responsiveness from a start.

Where the powertrain loses a little luster, however, is on the highway. The transmission seems sluggish at higher speeds, holding gears a bit too long. Passing and merging maneuvers aren’t its strong suit, and they require a stomp on the gas with a side of patience. The engine also sounds gruff both at idle and on the highway. It’s not loud, but it has a rough, unrefined note.
