2019 Volvo XC40 Gas Mileage Bests Less Powerful Rivals

2019 Volvo XC40 T5 Momentum

CARS.COM — In my recent First Drive review, I already reported that the stylish new 2019 Volvo XC40 delivers satisfying power with its 248-horsepower, turbocharged four-cylinder engine — more horsepower than its closest compact luxury SUV rivals. Now, the EPA ratings are out, and they show that the XC40 matches or bests its lower-powered rivals on gas mileage, too.

Just as Volvo succeeded in giving the new SUV a funky, chic style while also making it a leader in practical use of space, the automaker has managed to squeeze more power out of less gasoline.

The 248-hp, all-wheel-drive XC40 has been EPA-rated at a respectable 23/31/26 mpg city/highway/combined. That matches the ratings for all-wheel-drive versions of the rival 208-hp 2018 Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 (23/31/26 mpg). And it beats the ratings for all-wheel-drive models of the 228-hp 2018 BMW X1 xDrive28i (22/31/25 mpg) and 200-hp 2018 Audi Q3 (20/28/23 mpg). See their EPA ratings compared here.

The Volvo also matches up well with some mainstream compact SUVs for mileage — but note that all of these premium SUVs want to be fed with premium gasoline.

If gas mileage is a higher priority in your shopping for a premium compact SUV, these rivals have front-wheel-drive versions that are stingier, but the all-wheel-drive XC40 compares well with these, too. And Volvo, which is launching the XC40 with two all-wheel-drive models, has a front-wheel-drive version coming this summer, as well — with a more-economical 187-hp, turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder. Plus, a hybrid is coming down the road.
