Ram announced pricing for the new 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, and thanks to wide trim level availability, the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel starts at a pretty low price: $38,585, including $1,695 destination, for a two-wheel-drive Tradesman Quad Cab. Taken as a stand-alone option, the EcoDiesel runs $4,995, which is $3,000 more than the optional 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 eTorque. The diesel also will be offered on the Ram 1500 Rebel for the first time, so you can take the engine off the beaten path as well.
By Ram making its light-duty diesel available on more affordable trim levels and not just the higher ones, it is much more accessible for buyers who want the added torque and towing capability without paying through the nose for other options.
The 2019 Ford F-150 Power Stroke diesel isn't offered until you get to the XLT trim level with a SuperCab. Ford's diesel is a $4,995 option (diesel engine cost varies by trim level), but requires another option package, and the lowest available price is $46,255. For the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Duramax diesel, the premium for is a bit lower at $3,890, but it will still cost significantly more to start than the Ram because it isn't available until you get to an LT trim with a double cab at $45,200; choosing the Duramax requires you to purchase two other option packages.
The 2020 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel has the same displacement as the last EcoDiesel offered, but Ram says it's all-new and the turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 gets a power jump to 260 horsepower (an 8 percent increase) and a whopping 480 pounds-feet of torque (a 14 percent increase). This gives Ram claim to the highest half-ton diesel tow rating of 12,560 pounds.
The Ford F-150 3.0-liter Power Stroke diesel makes 250 hp and 440 pounds-feet of torque, while the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 3.0-liter Duramax makes 277 hp and 460 pounds-feet of torque. What about the Nissan Titan XD, you ask? Well, Nissan recently announced it is of that truck for the 2020 model year, so au revoir Titan XD diesel.
The Ram 1500 EcoDiesel will go on sale in the fourth quarter of 2019, and we're still waiting on one final detail: fuel economy. Expect those numbers to come before the truck goes on sale. You'll find out what we thought about how the new EcoDiesel engine drives when we can share more next week.
