2023 Genesis GV60 Lands IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus Award

The all-electric 2023 Genesis GV60 has earned its inaugural Top Safety Pick Plus award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Sharing a platform with its cousin, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 — also a Top Safety Pick Plus winner— the GV60 passed all required safety and crash tests in its first round of IIHS evaluations. The electric vehicle joins many of its gas-powered stablemates on the agency’s list of safest vehicles.

Checking the Boxes
To attain a Top Safety Pick designation, a vehicle must score good ratings in a series of IIHS crash tests: driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, original side, roof strength and head restraint tests. It must also score an advanced or superior rating for its front crash prevention system in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian crash tests. Whether a vehicle earns a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick Plus designation comes down to its headlights: The agency’s top accolade is reserved for vehicles that have good or acceptable headlights across all trims.
The GV60 earned good marks across all six crash tests and a superior rating for its front crash prevention system; meanwhile, its standard LED headlights secured the highest Plus designation.

Notable Safety Features
The GV60 packs a comprehensive list of safety and driver-assist features including forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist, a blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, and navigation-based adaptive cruise control. The vehicle’s hands-on semi-autonomous Highway Driving Assist 2 system enables automatic lane changes.
Joining the Pack
The newly awarded GV60 adds to Genesis’ roster of 2022 Top Safety Pick Plus designees; it joins the G70 (built after June 2021), G80 and G90 sedans, and the GV70 and GV80 SUVs. The brand’s newest battery-powered vehicles like the Electrified G80 and the upcoming Electrified GV70 have not been evaluated by the IIHS.
The 2023 GV60 is on sale now in select states, but the brand’s website notes extremely limited availability. Safety-minded EV shoppers should note that among the GV60’s competitors, the 2022 Tesla Model Y, 2022 Volvo XC40 Recharge and 2022 Audi E-Tron have each earned a Top Safety Pick Plus award.
