In order for a vehicle to earn a Top Safety Pick Plus award, a vehicle must earn a good or acceptable rating for its headlights across all trim levels (the lower Top Safety Pick only requires one set of headlights to have a good or acceptable rating). Additionally, vehicles must also receive good ratings across six crash-test categories: driver-side small overlap front, passenger-side small overlap front, moderate overlap front, original side, roof strength and head restraint tests. The vehicle must also secure an advanced or superior rating for its front crash prevention system in vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian tests.
In the case of the EV6, the car achieved a Top Safety Pick Plus status first time out for the 2022 model year, but the award only applied to vehicles built after August due to poor headlights. For 2023, the EV6 both excelled in crash tests and offers improved standard LED headlights. IIHS said some early 2023 EV6 models require an adjustment to the headlights to meet award standards, but Kia has notified EV6 owners by letter and dealers can make the adjustment free of charge if owners bring in their car.
The EV6’s award has allowed Kia to pull off a triple play, with the EV joining the brand’s other IIHS Top Safety Pick Plus winners, the K5 sedan and sporty Stinger hatchback.
