The Volkswagen Arteon is facing an uphill battle in the automotive market as increasing pressure from SUVs is cutting into its sales figures, but the German automaker isn’t ready to give up on the swoopy mid-size sedan yet. Evidence comes with the 2023 model, which receives more standard equipment and some minor cosmetic updates, plus an expected uptick in the starting price.
The Arteon’s entry-level SE R-Line gets more standard equipment that includes LED headlights, foglights, a light bar on the front grille, heated steering wheel, adaptive cruise control and lane departure steering assist. SEL R-Line variants now get bigger 20-inch wheels (up from 19 inches), and VW has added black-carbon trim and 30-color ambient lighting to enhance the line-topping SEL Premium R-Line’s luxury atmosphere.
Performance hardware carries over unchanged for 2023, with all Arteons powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine good for 300 horsepower and mated to a seven-speed automatic transmission, both upgraded for 2022. Front-wheel drive is standard on the SE R-Line, while the two SEL trims get the 4Motion all-wheel-drive system standard. FWD models can achieve an EPA estimated 25/33/28 mpg city/highway/combined; AWD delivers 22/31/25 mpg.
