After giving the GLC SUV a thorough refresh for 2023, Mercedes-Benz has announced an update for the SUV’s sloped-roof sibling, the 2024 GLC Coupe. Apart from its sportier exterior, the coupe mainly follows the same formula as the SUV when it comes to changes inside the cabin and under the hood. It gains a host of new tech and safety features, including a surprising focus on off-road jaunts along with mild-hybrid electrification. The refresh also addresses one of our biggest grievances with the current coupe: Its cargo space is significantly tighter (and less practical) than the SUV’s.

Mild-Hybrid Powertrain Adds Torque, Efficiency

Like its SUV counterpart, the GLC300 Coupe’s 255-horsepower, 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine gets a new mild-hybrid system with a 48-volt integrated electric starter-generator. While the coupe’s horsepower remains unchanged, it gains more standard torque with 295 pounds-feet, up from 273. The starter-generator also offers a temporary horsepower and torque boost of 23 horses and 148 pounds-feet, respectively.

According to the automaker, the system improves efficiency thanks to hybrid functions like coasting and energy recovery. EPA fuel-economy estimates are not official for the 2024 model, but the 2023 GLC300 Coupe gets 20/26/22 mpg city/highway/combined. While the GLC SUV is available with front- or all-wheel drive, the coupe is only offered with Mercedes’ standard 4Matic AWD system.

In addition to the mild-hybrid powertrain, the GLC Coupe gets a performance boost thanks to an updated suspension that promises more agile and stable handling. Meanwhile, improved aerodynamics and wind resistance reduce the coupe’s drag coefficient, says Mercedes. Despite these changes, the coupe’s 6.2-second 0-60 mph time remains nearly unchanged from the outgoing model, per the automaker’s estimates.

Stretched Exterior, AMG Line Included

The updated GLC Coupe retains its familiar swoopy exterior with only minimal changes for 2024, including more contoured side edges and an increase in the vehicle’s length, track widths and heights. According to Mercedes, the coupe grows 1.2 inches longer to benefit the wheelbase and both overhangs. The vehicle’s standard LED headlights will offer optional technology that features a matrix of LEDs that can adjust based on conditions and also includes guiding lines, symbols and animations.

Available as a $2,700 option, the 2024 coupe gets the AMG Line Package standard. The AMG Line’s exterior accents include chrome skid plates, standard 19-inch or optional 20-inch wheels and body-color wheel arches. A chrome diamond-block grille separated by a crossbar is standard. Interior accents for the AMG Line include brushed stainless-steel pedals, heavily bolstered sport front seats and a flat-bottom sport steering wheel wrapped in Nappa leather.

More Screen and Cargo Space Inside

Mirroring the GLC SUV, the coupe’s interior is updated with a redesigned dashboard and new floating displays. The highlight of the interior is a larger, 11.9-inch tablet-style center touchscreen that replaces the previous model’s 10.25-inch unit. Previously available only on the AMG Coupe, a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster positioned behind the steering wheel is now standard for the GLC300 Coupe.

The coupe’s cargo space also grows larger for 2024. According to the automaker’s estimates (which usually differ from Cars.com’s independent cargo testing), the 2024 model gets 19.2 cubic feet of trunk space behind the second-row seats — an increase of 1.6 cubic feet. Space behind the front row with the second-row seats folded increases by 3.1 cubic feet to measure 52.6 cubic feet.

Mercedes says occupants should expect a quieter cabin with reduced road and wind noise thanks to improved insulation. Other interior updates include a larger panoramic sunroof, standard heated front seats and a standard leather-trimmed dashboard.

Tech for Everyday and (Potential) Adventures

The 2024 GLC Coupe makes a variety of tech and safety features standard, including Mercedes’ latest MBUX multimedia system with advanced “Hey Mercedes” voice controls. Wireless charging and a Burmester 3D sound system are also newly standard. On the safety front, the coupe offers an enhanced optional Driver Assistance Package, which bundles features like adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go and route-based speed adjustment, lane-centering steering assist and automatic parking assist. For 2024, the lane-centering system adds lane detection and an additional 360-degree camera system for low speeds. Traffic sign recognition also adds warnings for stop signs and red lights.

Along with the updated convenience and safety tech designed for daily driving, the GLC Coupe is now more prepared to leave the pavement, says Mercedes. A new off-road mode with a standard 360-degree camera system comes with a “transparent hood” feature that displays a view under the front of the vehicle, helping drivers monitor obstacles like rocks or potholes on unpaved terrain. The off-road system also displays the vehicle’s position and the steering angle of the front wheels along with information like inclination, gradient and location.

The 2024 GLC300 Coupe will arrive at U.S. dealerships later in 2023, with pricing to be announced closer to its arrival, but the automaker has not yet announced when the coupe’s performance-oriented AMG variant will be available. The 2023 GLC Coupe currently starts at $55,850 (all prices include destination), and the GLC Coupe’s archrival, the 2023 BMW X4, starts at $55,195.
