We thought the biggest news about a redesigned Subaru Impreza would be the updated looks inside and out, which the car sorely needs. However, Subaru announced today that the 2012 compact sedan and hatchback will boast a 36 mpg highway estimate, making it the most efficient all-wheel-drive vehicle of any kind in the U.S.

Subaru says the 2012 Impreza will have a roomier and more refined interior, also sorely needed.

Full details about the engine, and more images, will be released at the New York auto show starting April 19.
