This might seem like an arcane reference, but does anyone remember the scene in the Sylvester Stallone-Wesley Snipes sci-fi action flick “Demolition Man” when Stallone crashes the car? This futuristic car — rather than deploying an airbag — encases him and Sandra Bullock in some kind of foam.
This is the image that comes to mind with Toyota Gosei’s 360-degree airbag system (Toyota Gosei is an auto-parts maker that supplies Toyota). The car deploys airbags at every conceivable impact point, including one on the exterior, to protect the waists and heads of pedestrians.
No word on when or if Toyota will incorporate the airbag system into commercial vehicles.
