Mazda and Fiat parent automaker Stellantis are issuing separate recalls for the related MX-5 Miata and 124 Spider coupes, respectively, due to problems with airbag deployment.
Affected vehicles include some 77,700 model-year 2016-23 MX-5 Miatas and 15,800 model-year 2017-20 124 Spiders. The issue involves a software error in the airbag control module, which may cause the front airbags to deploy with excessive force during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
To resolve the problem, dealers will update the airbag control module software for free. Fiat will begin notifying owners Nov. 7; Mazda owners will begin notifying owners Nov. 17. Those with further questions can call Stellantis at 800-853-1403 (its number for this recall is A3B), Mazda at 800-222-5500 (its number is 6924I), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
