Airbag Issue Prompts Another Massive Recall for Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra

Following a recall in which more than 330,000 of its heavy-duty pickup trucks were recalled for a fire risk in the engine, GM has issued another massive recall — this time including its half-ton 1500 series trucks. The latest recall is for some 410,000 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 1500, 2500 and 3500 trucks and involves an issue with the roof rail airbag.

Affected trucks include model-year 2015-16 Chevrolet Silverados and GMC Sierras. The roof rail airbag inflator end cap may detach from the inflator, or the inflator sidewall may rupture. A separated inflator end cap or rupture can allow compressed gas to escape, resulting in the end cap or other components propelling into the cabin, increasing the risk of injury or a crash.

To resolve the issue, dealers will replace the left and right side roof rail airbag modules for free. Chevy and GMC parent automaker GM will send interim owner notification letters informing owners of the safety risk Aug. 16; owners will receive a second notice when a remedy is available. Those with further questions can call Chevrolet at 800-222-1020, GMC at 800-462-8782, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check their vehicle identification number and learn more.
