Honda is recalling nearly 1.7 million vehicles due to an increased risk of a crash from defective parts in the steering gearbox.

Affected vehicles include model-year 2023-25 Acura Integra and model-year 2024-25 Integra Type S hatchbacks, as well as model-year 2023-25 Honda Civic Type R hatchbacks and CR-V, CR-V Hybrid and HR-V SUVs; model-year 2022-25 Civic sedans and hatchbacks; and model-year 2025 CR-V e:FCEV fuel-cell SUVs and Civic Hybrid sedans and hatchbacks. According to Honda, the steering gearbox worm wheel can expand when it gets hot or damp, which leads to less grease between the worm wheel and worm gear. In addition, the worm gear spring’s preload was set too high, making the parts slide against each other more forcefully. This extra friction can cause strange noises when steering, make it harder to steer, or cause the steering to feel sticky, increasing the risk of a crash.

To resolve the problem, dealers will replace the worm gear spring and redistribute or add grease, as necessary, for free. Honda will notify all owners by Nov. 18. Those with further questions can contact Honda at 888-234-2138 (Honda’s numbers for this recall are SJS, MJU, QJT and VJV), call the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
