In a world where appearance is everything, the less-expensive, V-6 version of Audi’s Q7 SUV may become a hot seller. Priced $10,000 less than the V-8 Q7 4.2 that’s been on sale since June, the Q7 3.6 should go on sale in the fall with a price tag of $39,900. The Q7 3.6 Premium begins at $45,900. Neither price includes a $720 destination charge.
The 3.6’s engine is an intriguing 280-hp V-6 with direct fuel injection. We haven’t tested this model yet, but Audi’s power plants rarely disappoint, even in base models. And all Q7s feature Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system. Premium models come with features like leather seating standard.
Compared to the $49,900 4.2, this new 3.6 sounds like a relative bargain. SUV and luxury car buyers have long opted for more-powerful V-8 models, but for shoppers considering a luxury SUV just for its looks and interior comfort, Audi delivers one for less than the redesigned 2007 BMW X5 3.0si or Range Rover Sport.
