CARS.COM —Audi raises more Q’s than A’s as it teases the concept version of what would be its fifth Q model ahead of the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit next month. The Q8 concept will be unveiled Jan. 9 at the Detroit show, revealing what Audi indicates will be a full-size SUV with the styling of a coupe.
Not just any coupe, mind you — but the boxy, flat-nosed ’80s rally racer, the Ur-quattro. We’re not exactly sure how that’s going to play out in reality, and the teaser image Audi released doesn’t help. It depicts an SUV from the front, albeit one with more severe angles and deeper grooves, meaner-looking headlights and a Darth Vader mouthlike octagonal grille defined by six vertical, widely spaced spindles.
Whatever the Q8 resembles, it appears it’ll have an environmental conscience. That’s judging by the e-tron badge on the concept image’s lower front bumper, indicating that the concept will be a plug-in hybrid.
If it makes it to production, the Q8 will join Audi’s family of Q cars, which currently includes the Q3, Q5, SQ5 and Q7. We’ll bring you more info and images straight from the floor of the Detroit auto show in January.
