CARS.COM — BMW announced today that it is recalling about 840,000 vehicles for driver-side airbag inflators made by Takata Corp. that could rupture and send bits of shrapnel at the occupants of the vehicle, causing injury or death.
Vehicles affected by the latest BMW recall include:
2008-13 1 Series coupes and convertibles (includes 1M)
2006-11 3 Series sedans (includes M3)
2009-11 335d sedans
2006-12 3 Series Sports Wagons
2007-13 3 Series coupes and convertibles (includes M3)
2013-15 X1 SUVs
2007-10 X3 SUVs
2007-13 X5 SUVs (includes X5 M)
2009-13 X5 xDrive35d SUVs
2008-14 X6 crossovers (includes X6 M)
2010-11 X6 hybrid crossovers
“We have a number of vehicles that have the PSDI-5 type driver’s side inflator, and those are the vehicles being recalled,” said BMW spokesman Dave Buchko.
The BMW recall is part of an expansion announced on Jan. 22 by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the massive ongoing Takata recall. NHTSA said it was adding 5 million airbag inflators and three additional automakers to the growing list of Takata-related recalls. It was then up to the automakers to announce specific models recalled.
Including the latest BMW recall, just more than 5 million vehicles have been recalled in this latest round of actions since the NHTSA announcement. Other automakers included in this round are Volkswagen, Audi, Daimler, Honda, Ford and Mazda. VW and Audi also announced recalls today.
These actions bring to around 24 million the total vehicles being recalled for the Takata airbag inflator defects, which have been linked to nine deaths in the U.S. and 11 worldwide.
BMW did not immediately announce an owner-notification schedule.
