BMW Reveals i4, Eyes Battery-Electric Sedan for U.S. in 2022
At BMW’s recent BMW Group Annual Conference, the German automaker revealed the production version of the i4, a battery-electric sedan based on the 4 Series Gran Coupe (which is also a sedan, despite having “coupe” in its name). We don’t have many details just yet but can confirm that the i4 will be heading to the U.S. sometime in early 2022, according to BMW estimates.

Whether the i4 will be the first of BMW’s new battery-electric vehicles to hit U.S. dealerships is unclear. BMW may follow fellow German brands Volkswagen and Audi and whet shoppers’ electric appetites with the iX electric SUV first before offering the i4. But what details we do have about the i4 make it seem like a strong rival to the Tesla Model 3.
Range estimates are “up to 300 miles” in EPA testing, according to BMW, but the European testing range estimate is up to 590 kilometers (roughly 366 miles), so it’s possible we may see a higher figure. The EPA has not been kind to European EVs in recent years, however, so don’t count on it.
Power is estimated at up to 530 horsepower, providing an estimated 0-60-mph time of around 4 seconds, according to BMW. Those numbers likely belong to the M Performance version of the i4 that BMW says will be available.
More details about the i4 will be released in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.
