BMW and SGL Group will set up shop in Moses Lake, Wash., about 150 miles east of Seattle, in a joint venture to produce carbon fiber parts for BMW’s electric Megacity vehicle.
Using cheap, sustainable energy from the hydroelectric plants of the Columbia River, the plant will manufacture lightweight carbon fiber materials, spinning raw materials into fibers one-tenth the width of a human hair. The electric urban Megacity will use the components and is expected to launch before 2015. Carbon fiber is used in a few high-performance BMW models but is also extremely expensive.
BMW and SGL will break ground on the 60-acre site in June and put an initial investment of $100 million into the factory. It will employ 80 workers at first, along with 200 construction jobs.
