Cash for Clunkers Funding Will Come to a Vote This Week

This means the Senate will have to pass the House version of the bill because adding even one amendment would require House approval. This would delay the funds until after Labor Day since the House is already on its recess.
Some of the program’s most vociferous opponents, including Republican Sen. Jim DeMint of South Carolina, have said that they won’t block the vote. What’s still unclear is when the Senate will take up the issue. On Tuesday, the Senate began debate of Judge Sonia Sotomayor’s nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court.
LaHood has said the CARS program will run out of money by the end of the week without additional funds, and many dealers have suspended selling cars under the program until they know the money will be there.
