Ford to Expand Rearview Cameras by 2011

Update: Ford says this is for “most” of its models, not all. Not included will be the Ford Fiesta and some trucks, SUVs and vans.

What’s interesting is Ford only mentions in its press release the enhanced visibility the system will offer drivers and the aid it gives truck, SUV and van owners when attaching trailers. It makes no mention of the U.S. Department of Transportation’s recent call to have the technology added as standard equipment due to accidental rollover deaths.

Ford’s system wouldn’t be standard by 2011, but if it would be available on nearly all models. If the government makes a ruling on the proposal, it would be easier for Ford to adapt to it. Customers would still likely end up paying the difference.
