This is where the awkwardly titled SAE J1772 Task Force comes in.
The task force represents a collaboration between the Society of Automotive Engineers and GM in trying to standardize the plug for future electric vehicles. A common plug will make it easier to build infrastructure to support the success of electric vehicles and assure owners their car will be compatible no matter where they take it.
GM has an especially big stake in the common plug because it will (likely) be the first automaker to mass-produce an electric vehicle — the Chevy Volt. The task force also hopes to create a standard for physical, electrical and performance requirements for the plug.
