Here’s What the 2021 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid Costs

If you’re looking for a small plug-in-hybrid SUV with all-wheel drive, it might be worth considering the Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid. It received some mild updates for 2021, and now we know just how much the more fuel-efficient version of Subaru’s smallest SUV will cost.

Price and Release Date
With a starting price of $36,395, including the destination fee, the 2021 Crosstrek Hybrid arrives in dealerships this winter priced $240 more than the 2020 model (and $40 of that increase belongs to the destination fee’s jump to $1,050 from $1,010). The extra cost comes with revised front styling and a retuned suspension. The sole option package is an extra $2,500 and adds a moonroof, built-in navigation system, Harman Kardon premium stereo and heated steering wheel.
Engine and Gas Mileage
Subaru gave the gas-only Crosstrek some styling and suspension updates for 2021, but it also got a new 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine for higher trim levels, which showed well when the Crosstrek finished second in our recent affordable small SUV comparison.
The Crosstrek Hybrid, meanwhile, uses a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gas engine combined with an electric drive motor and a battery pack to provide power through a continuously variable automatic transmission. AWD is standard.
According to Subaru, the plug-in hybrid powertrain provides an EPA-estimated 17 miles of purely electric driving, 35 mpg combined and 90 mpg-equivalent, with 480 miles of total range. (The EPA has yet to publish ratings for the 2021 Crosstrek Hybrid as of this writing, but those figures match the agency’s figures for the 2020 model.)
What Does the Crosstrek Hybrid Compete With?
If you’re looking for a hybrid SUV — plug-in or otherwise — that isn’t the Crosstrek Hybrid, you might have to turn your attention to larger vehicles, particularly if you want AWD. The Kia Niro offers hybrid and plug-in-hybrid options with similar size to the Crosstrek, but it’s front-wheel drive. The Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V and Ford Escape are all available as hybrids (the Ford and Toyota as plug-in hybrids, too), but they’re larger than the Crosstrek and Niro. Alternatively, the Mini Cooper SE Countryman offers a similar footprint in a plug-in SUV with AWD, but it’s priced a bit higher.
