Trying to keep its brand out front when it comes to safety, Honda announced that it has developed a new and improved airbag that will provide additional safety for drivers during accidents.

The keys to Honda’s new i-SRS airbag are a spiraling seam in the design and a gas-release control valve that deploys the airbag faster and creates a longer overall period of inflation. The result, according to Honda, is more-effective protection for the driver in severe impacts and increased safety in different types of crashes.

The new airbag system will make its first appearance in the Life minicar due to be released in Japan in November. No word yet on when the technology will make it to cars in the United States.
