The bill, known as the Advanced Vehicle Technology Act of 2009, was sponsored by U.S. Rep. Gary Peters (D-Mich.), who trumpeted the measure as leading to the faster development of more fuel-efficient cars and trucks.
The bill funds research and development of batteries, storage devices, hybrid and electric vehicle technology, hydrogen fuel cells, engine systems and components, and communications for vehicle and electric grid infrastructure. It also would create a program for research of medium- to heavy-duty commercial trucks and transit vehicles.
The bill must pass the U.S. Senate, however, and afterward it will be up to Congress to allocate the funds to specific projects.
