Is This the Ugliest Paint Color on a Great Car? 2015 BMW M4 Edition (17 Photos)

A new M from BMW is always exciting. The company unveiled the M3 sedan and M4 coupe ahead of the 2014 Detroit auto show in some uncommon colors. The M3 had a unique shade of blue, but the new BMW M4 was adorned in something called Austin Yellow Metallic that left a bad taste.

Color us somewhat surprised that more than six months later the M4 vehicle that arrived for us to test wore the same paint color. There are six other colors it could’ve been painted in, including the Yas Marina Blue Metallic that the M3 was dipped in.

Spending more time with the color didn’t make it any more endearing for most of our editors.

Most echoed executive editor Joe Wiesenfelder’s sentiments regarding the yellow coupe: “I don’t find it particularly pleasing, but you can’t say it doesn’t stand out.”

“The Austin Yellow Metallic falls somewhere between Power Ranger yellow and ‘Ghostbusters’ Slimer green. It stands out, but not in a good way,” said consumer affairs editor Kelsey Mays.

“At least it will be easy to find wherever you park it,” said fleet coordinator Brian Normille.

Some were a little more colorful in their distaste. “That color looks like something I coughed up during the middle of my last cold. Very bilious,” editor-in-chief Patrick Olsen summarized.

And then there was this comment from assistant managing editor Eric Rossi: “We recently fed our 5-month-old daughter pureed green beans … the end result was the same color as the M4.”

As you attempt to wash that imagery out of your mind, there were a few staff members who liked the yellowish gold Austin hue. To be as fair as possible, we will include their praise of it.

“I probably wouldn’t choose this color if I were buying an M4, but I’m glad it’s offered. Seems like every car out there is some shade of gray or a dark blue. This stands out,” photo editor Evan Sears said.

And then there was one true defender of the shade, assistant managing editor Bill Jackson: “I like the color. Further, if one does not like the color, BMW has other shades it can paint the car. If there’s something to not like, it’s that the paint is an extra-cost option.”
