That 31 mpg benchmark is attached to the new Cherokee’s base engine, a 184-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder. The EPA also announced fuel-economy figures for the other two-wheel-drive version: the 271-hp, 3.2-liter V-6 will get an estimated 19/28/22 mpg. Both engines pair with a nine-speed automatic transmission.

The EPA in August reported figures for the four-wheel-drive versions of the Cherokee: 21/28/24 mpg for the four-cylinder version and 19/27/22 mpg for the V-6. All versions improve on the outgoing Liberty’s best fuel-economy figures of 16/22 mpg city/highway.

The 2014 Cherokee has a starting price of $23,990, including a $995 destination charge. It is expected to hit dealerships in early fall. In the spring, the automaker announced it was delaying the vehicle’s launch in part due to continued work on the new nine-speed automatic.
