Kia redesigned its Niro compact hatchback for 2023 with sleek new styling and more passenger room. The 2023 Niro will come as a standard gasoline-electric hybrid, a plug-in hybrid with some electric-only range and as a fully electric vehicle. Kia released pricing for the updated hybrid model: The base LX trim starts at $27,785, about $1,700 more than the outgoing version (all prices include destination).
The hybrid’s powertrain carries over from last year: a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine pairs with a 32-kilowatt electric motor for a combined output of 139 horsepower and 195 pounds-feet of torque. It’s again front-wheel drive only. Fuel economy also carries over; the 2023 Niro hybrid has an EPA-estimated rating of 53/54/53 mpg city/highway/combined.
What does not carry over is its price, which increases this year. The base price is for the entry LX trim. The Niro hybrid is also available in the mid-level EX trim ($30,385) and top-level SX trim ($33,785).
For that extra cash comes a lot of added standard safety features, including forward collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, lane keep assist, lane following assist, driver attention warning, blind spot collision avoidance with parallel exit, rear cross-traffic alert, safe-exit warning and rear occupant alert.
Options include Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go and navigation-based curve speed reduction, as well as the Highway Driving Assist II system, a semi-autonomous driving aid that combines lane change assist, forward collision avoidance and Smart Cruise Control.
Kia says the 2023 Niro hybrid is arriving at dealers now and will be available in all 50 states; pricing has not yet been released for the PHEV or EV versions.
