Do you ever watch the business news and wonder who’s making money in the stock market when most people you know are cutting back? Inexplicably, luxury automakers saw sales bounce back in September.

While sales of Toyota were down 19% in September, Lexus saw sales go up 7%; that’s mostly because of the new RX crossover, which had an uptick of 70%.

Ford sales were down 6%, but sales at its Swedish Volvo brand were up 16%, thanks largely to the new XC60 crossover.

With relatively no new models in its lineup, BMW sales were up 3%.

Even at GM where sales were down 45%, Cadillac sales were down just 8% because of swift sales of the redesigned SRX crossover.

Porsche — which had seen sales plummet during the past year — had a positive month, up over 8%.

Mercedes was down 9% for September but ahead of the 23.6% dip for the year to date. Again, Mercedes has a new crossover the GLK.

Infiniti was down 15%, but it too was faring better than the 33% drop for the year to date.

Audi’s sales slipped 5%, despite its new Q5 crossover. Sales of its larger sedans, the A6 and A8 are down as well with a new A8 expected to go on sale next year.

Acura might be the one brand with little to look forward to. Its September sales were down 30.3%, which mirrors its year-to-date number of 33.6%. Lukewarm response to redesigned models like the TL have tarnished the brand.

With few exceptions, the luxury market is picking up ahead of the full-line brands like Ford, Chevy and Toyota. Perhaps this trend will trickle down to more affordable makes soon.
