When you hear the ethereal-sounding descriptor “sensual clarity,” it sounds either like a tenet of New Ageism or the name of a crummy R&B band at a community event. But it is in fact the way Mercedes-Benz characterizes the design of its Concept S-Class Coupe, slated to be unveiled this week at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show.

“At the center of our work is sensual clarity as an expression of modern luxury, because this is precisely what gets to the heart of our brand philosophy — the bipolarity of intelligence and emotion,” Gorden Wagener, vice president design at M-B parent company Daimler AG, said in a statement.

That’s totally what we were going to say. Uh, moving on, the rear-wheel-drive coupe’s flowing profile features the automaker’s signature dropping line, an elongated hood, a crouched greenhouse and a high beltline. Other body features include accentuated wheel arches over 21-inch wheels, a dome-shaped stretched roofline, frameless doors and a window area uninterrupted by B-pillars. A large, aggressive-looking “diamond” grille, adorned with dark rectangular elements, dominates the front end and frames the Mercedes star emblem; LED-running headlights further define the coupe’s face.

Inside, the upper section of the curved white instrument panel is intended to “float” in front of the dashboard and transition seamlessly into the doors in a wraparound design. Multimedia features include 12.3-inch screens (continuing from the S-Class sedan) and a touch-screen showing four world clocks. Front seats with side bolsters envelope the occupant while vertical piping adorns the calfskin surfaces and hand-tufted silk carpet; the vehicle headliner also is hand-woven silk.

The concept coupe is powered by a twin-turbo V-8 good for 449 horsepower and 516 pounds-feet of torque. It is equipped with the automaker’s Intelligent Drive safety technology, which uses cameras and radar sensors to monitor potential hazards all around the vehicle.

We’ll have to wait for more info when the concept bows at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, which starts today. Until then, check out more renderings of the vehicle below.
