CARS.COM — Japanese automaker Mitsubishi has announced the name of its new compact SUV that it plans to unveil early next month at the 2017 Geneva International Motor Show in Switzerland. Drawing from its heritage, Mitsubishi will call the new vehicle the Eclipse Cross, ostensibly hoping to draw upon the popularity of the old Eclipse sports coupe sold from 1989 to 2012, combined with the trending crossover segment.

The new compact SUV supposedly employs coupelike styling and a deep red paint that Mitsubishi says “evokes the brilliance of the prominence seen during the total solar eclipse.” The Eclipse Cross will be part of a trio of new crossovers that the automaker plans to bring to markets worldwide, focusing on that hot segment instead of its more familiar coupes, sedans and light trucks.

More information on the Eclipse Cross will be made available as the debut approaches in early March.
