Most and Least Expensive Cars to Insure for 2011

Compact crossovers, minivans and SUVs are the cheapest cars to insure for 2011, according to a new study from Insure.com. It costs less to insure family vehicles because they aren’t as likely to get into crashes as flashier luxury and sports cars, says Russ Rader, spokesman for the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. Even so, it’s surprising to see that not one sedan model made Insure.com’s most-affordable top 20 list.

The leader in the most-affordable arena was the Chrysler Town & Country LX minivan, with a national average annual premium of $1,092. It’s important to note that the redesigned 2011 Town & Country (above) doesn’t have an LX trim and costs about $5,000 more than the 2010 model. We’d assume this model won’t be at the top of the most-affordable list next year, but then again, the Town & Country might not be long for this world anyway. We’d expect a Dodge Grand Caravan would be similarly affordable.

According to Insure.com, the Mercedes-Benz SL65 AMG roadster is the most expensive car to insure for 2011, at a cost of $3,544 for a single driver with a clean record. Though, with a starting price of $198,750, the insurance cost is probably an afterthought for the person who can afford such a vehicle.

You might remember that we had another list like this in November from InsWeb, an insurer comparison provider. Unsurprisingly, minivans — like the Kia Sedona — and family-oriented sedans were cheaper to insure than exotic German sports cars in that study as well. InsWeb’s reasoning for the difference in insurance cost had to do with a given vehicle’s loss behavior and how much it cost to repair that vehicle; the same formulation was used by Insure.com here.

InsWeb did go a bit further in saying that their formulations factored in the propensity that a given vehicle would be involved in an accident caused by their owners. Below you’ll find the complete list of the least and most expensive cars to insure from Insure.com.
