Even as companies from Google to Audi have promised self-driving cars by the end of the decade, experts admit we still have a long way to go. Still, that hasn’t stopped Nissan from holding firm on its goal announced nearly two years ago to have autonomous cars by 2020.

CEO Carlos Ghosn told reporters in Japan this week that the automaker’s “cars will be ready” for self-drivability by 2020, according to the Associated Press via The Detroit News. But he said regulations around the world might still prevent consumers from getting their hands on them. (Or off them, so to speak.)

Nissan’s plans for self-driving cars remain on track, but Ghosn said the focus is on autonomous technology, not a car that can drive itself with zero human interaction. Still, Nissan may end up having one of those anyway, he added.
