BMW will take a risk with its 7 Series luxury sedans, building the only luxury sedans in this class that don’t include V-8 power but still have price tags above $70,000. The 2011 740i will start at $70,150, and you can get the longer 740Li off the lot for $74,550. Both prices do not include an $875 destination charge.
The twin-turbo six-cylinder will produce 315 horsepower under BMW’s much-touted EfficientDynamics philosophy. The German automaker claims that its modern engines can “equal or exceed” the outputs of older, larger engines with more cylinders. It will remain to be seen if luxury shoppers will buy into this less-is-more notion or if they’ll simply opt for a V-8 in a Jaguar XJ, Audi A8 or Mercedes-Benz S-Class (or bump up to $80,000 for the BMW 750).
The 740i and 740Li have a number of available packages and options, including the M Sport, Driver Assistance, Luxury Seating, Rear Entertainment and Individual Composition packages.
