Vehicles Affected: Approximately 193,936 model-year 2006-11 versions of the Grand Vitara SUV and 2007-11 SX4 compact cars.
The Problem: Over time, the occupant classification sensor mat installed in the front passenger seat may fail due to repeated flexing of the mat from seat use; during a crash necessitating deployment, the airbag will deploy regardless of whether the front-seat occupant is an adult or a child, increasing the risk of an injury.
The Fix: Dealers will replace the front passenger seat cushion assembly, which includes the affected sensor mat, for free. Vehicles that previously had a countermeasure occupant classification system sensor mat installed under the special coverage campaign conducted by Suzuki distributors in the U.S. are not affected by the recall.
What Owners Should Do: Sufficient quantities of parts are not currently available to repair all affected vehicles, so the automaker will begin notifying owners in October and then make a second notification when parts are available. Owners can call Suzuki at 714-996-7040 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or go to www.safercar.gov, for more info.
