General Motors is recalling 1,262 Chevrolet Avalanche, Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 light-duty pickups from the 2011 model year to fix a potential problem with the rear axle.
The rear axle cross pin bolt in these trucks wasn't properly heat-treated during manufacturing, and it could fracture while driving. If this happens, the bolt could become free inside the axle, causing the rear axle and wheels to lock up without warning. The driver might not be able to control the vehicle, and a crash could occur. The driver may also hear a banging noise coming from inside the rear axle.
To fix the problem, GM dealers will install a new rear axle cross pin in the trucks. The recall is expected to begin next month. Owners with questions or concerns can contact Chevrolet at 800-630-2438, GMC at 866-996-9463 and GM's owner center at http://www.gmownercenter.com.
