Subaru Viziv Tourer Sporty Wagon Concept Bows at Geneva

CARS.COM

Looks like: Robocop designed a Legacy GT Wagon

Defining characteristics: Wagon with a hood scoop? Wagon with a hood scoop.

Ridiculous features: A lot of expensive-looking carbon fiber

Chance of being mass-produced: It’s a design concept, so … none? Less than none for a U.S. take on the design. (We don’t buy wagons that aren’t covered in cladding and nearly analogous to a crossover.)

The 2018 Geneva International Motor Show hosted the introduction of the latest in Subaru’s Viziv line of concepts: The Viziv Tourer Concept, a wagon design that still has the muscular fenders and squared-off wheel arches of the Viziv Concept sedan that debuted at the 2017 Tokyo Motor Show.

So, what is the Viziv Tourer Concept? Is it a return of the beloved WRX hatchback in longer-roof form? Is it a future GT or WRX version of the Legacy wagon-replacing Levorg not sold in the U.S.?

Specifications and details are scant since this is purely a design concept – and Subaru has a strong track record of turning really cool-looking concepts into … well, Subarus. But in terms of size, the all-wheel-drive, boxer-engine-powered wagon is longer, wider and lower than the current WRX sedan; it’s shorter in length than the Legacy sedan but still wider and lower.

“The hexagonal grille is the starting point for a rigid, forward-thrusting body that combines with four powerfully defined fenders to highlight the enjoyment of driving while conveying a sense of security,” according to the automaker’s description of the concept.

Interior features include an advanced version of the EyeSight suite of safety features, which Subaru says it included in anticipation of the “widespread future deployment” of self-driving technologies, with the express purpose of reducing driver fatigue on long car trips. Similarly suited for long journeys, the Viziv Tourer wagon also boasts “capacious” luggage storage and seating for four.

Subaru claims the design of the Viziv Tourer is indicative of the future of design for its production cars. We’ll have to wait and see.
