CARS.COM — The 2018 Atlas is Volkswagen’s big, new three-row family SUV — and it’s a pretty darn good effort at that, rife with intuitive technology, a cavernous interior and lots of bottom-line value. The Atlas dominated its rivals in Cars.com’s 2017 Three-Row SUV Challenge, and after that it went on to win our top accolade for the 2018 model year: Cars.com’s Best of Award.

As we’ve done for five years running with our Best Of vehicles, we went out to buy one and own it for an entire year to see what it’s like over the long haul. The Atlas comes in a lot of different trim levels, but we wanted key safety technologies like automatic emergency braking, forward collision warning and lane-keeping steering assist — all of which Volkswagen essentially relegates to the top half of trim levels.

We ended up settling on either an Atlas SEL or SEL Premium with a six-cylinder engine and all-wheel drive. Which model did we wind up going with? Watch the video below to find out.
