Video: What Are the Best and Worst States for Drivers?
If your Instagram feed these days seems packed with posts from friends in Maui or Oahu, well, take solace in this: As driving conditions go, Hawaii rates a solid anoha. That’s according to a new study from WalletHub, which analyzed 23 metrics, from average gas prices and density of repair shops to bridge quality and share of traffic congestion during rush hour.

In WalletHub’s 100-point index, Hawaii got just under 32 points — more than 12 points below next-worst Washington. Hawaii had the lowest scores in fuel prices, miles of roadway by population density, and per-capita car washes and gas stations, WalletHub said. Our nation’s 50th state might be a tropical paradise, but when it comes to driving, it can be a real beach.
So, what was the best state? In a bit of a photo finish, Texas emerged as the No. 1 state for drivers, followed closely by Kansas and Nebraska, according to WalletHub. The Lone Star State’s top billing isn’t surprising, given it boasts four of the top 10 cities for drivers in a separate WalletHub study.
Still, driving displeasure may have little effect on general well-being. Driving conditions notwithstanding, Hawaii ranks the third-best state for overall happiness, according to a separate, 28-factor study from WalletHub. So keep browsing those Honolulu greetings on your social media: There are a lot of worse places to end up.
